Inspiration

The Nightmare is a haunting oil painting by Swiss-British artist Henry Fuseli, first exhibited in 1782. The painting depicts a woman in deep sleep, with an imp perched on her chest and a ghostly horse (a literal night mare) emerging from the shadows. Despite the shameless pun, Fuseli’s work became an instant sensation, embodying the themes of Romantic horror and the supernatural.

Homage

Peter’s Nightmare shows a nervous Peter III of Russia squatting implike atop his wife Catherine the Great, his toy soldiers on the bedside table. Catherine, feigning sleep, is reaching for a dagger, ready to overthrow her awful husband. Extra History’s six-episode Extra History series on Catherine the Great originally premiered in January of 2017. Art by David Hueso.
