Inspiration

Nighthawks is an oil painting by American artist Edward Hopper, completed in 1942. It portrays a late-night scene in a diner, where the four isolated figures evoke a sense of urban alienation. Hopper’s use of light and shadow, along with the painting’s cinematic composition, has made Nighthawks a quintessential work of American realism.

Homage

Misanthropes recreates Hopper’s restaurant, populated by a collection of famously misanthropic or antisocial figures we’ve covered in Extra History. From right to left, these include Charles Trevelyan (waiter), Cheng I Sao (lady in red), Henry Ford (man in hat), Vlad the Impaler (barstool), Rasputin (alcove), John Blunt (upper window), and our signal of things to come, The Foreshadow (rooftop). Art by David Hueso.
