Inspiration
Nighthawks is an oil painting by American artist Edward Hopper, completed in 1942. It portrays a late-night scene in a diner, where the four isolated figures evoke a sense of urban alienation. Hopper’s use of light and shadow, along with the painting’s cinematic composition, has made Nighthawks a quintessential work of American realism.

Homage
Misanthropes recreates Hopper’s restaurant, populated by a collection of famously misanthropic or antisocial figures we’ve covered in Extra History. From right to left, these include Charles Trevelyan (waiter), Cheng I Sao (lady in red), Henry Ford (man in hat), Vlad the Impaler (barstool), Rasputin (alcove), John Blunt (upper window), and our signal of things to come, The Foreshadow (rooftop).
