Inspiration

Merry Old Santa Claus is an illustration by American artist Thomas Nast, created in 1881 for Harper’s Weekly. Nast’s depiction of Saint Nicholas as a cheerful, bearded man in a red suit played a significant role in shaping the modern image of Santa Claus. The piece remains one of the most enduring images of the character.

Homage

Krampus Claus depicts Krampus as having taken Santa’s outfit, as Saint Nicholas runs half-naked behind.  In Krampus’ arms are a variety of objects representing past holiday episodes of Extra History and Extra Mythology. These include Yule Lad dolls (The Yule Lads), Tió de Nadal (Caga Tió de Nadal), Eggnog cups and a sword from West Point (The Great Eggnog Riot), and a pipe and Champagne (Christmas Truce). Art by David Hueso.
