Inspiration

Et in Arcadia ego, also known as The Arcadian Shepherds, is a Baroque oil painting by Italian artist Giovanni Francesco Barbieri - better known as Guercino - created around 1618-1622. The work features shepherds discovering a monument inscribed with the phrase “Even in Arcadia, there am I,” a reminder that death exists even in idyllic paradise - a central theme of memento mori.

Homage

In this painting Vlad III–commonly known as Vlad the Impaler–and his father Vlad Dracul, ponder a monument bearing the Latin inscription Et in Impalia ego, or “Even in impaling, there am I.” The ruins of Poenari Citadel - built by Vlad III, supposedly by enslaved Boyars - broods over the scene. Art by David Hueso.
