Inspiration
American artist Frank Frazetta’s Conan the Barbarian captures the fierce, primal essence of the legendary warrior, painted in 1965 for Robert E Howard’s Conan the Adventurer. With dramatic lighting, towering musculature, and visceral movement, this and other artwork by Frazetta played a defining role in shaping the heroic image in modern fantasy illustration.

Homage
D’Aubigny depicts the French opera singer, swordswoman, adventurer and horsewoman standing amid a pile of timber strewn with symbols of her life. These include a discarded dress, sheet music, and the blades of defeated opponents. Around her leg curls her lover, who she’s rescued from the convent burning in the background, while Louis XIV looks on in amusement. Art by David Hueso.
