Inspiration
The Kiss, or Il Bacio, is an 1859 Romantic-style oil painting by Italian artist Francesco Hayez. Painted during the height of the Italian Risorgimento, it depicts two lovers in a passionate embrace.The work is often interpreted as a symbol of Italian unification, presumably depicting a young patriot about to go and fight for Italy.

​Homage
Garibaldi and Anita show off their explosive chemistry, stealing a kiss during the Siege of Rome. While in reality, Anita was both pregnant and ill with malaria during the siege - meaning the stories of her commanding troops during the fighting are likely exaggerations - it certainly captures the couple’s life of romance, revolution, and tragedy.
