Inspiration

Lovers Walking in the Snow (Crow and Heron) is a woodblock print by Japanese artist Suzuki Harunobu, created during the Edo period around the 1760s. A master of the ukiyo-e style, Harunobu captures a tender winter scene of two lovers strolling beneath falling snow, blending delicate detail with a poetic atmosphere.

Homage

Lovers Walking in the Steam depicts the famed samurai and nationalist reformer Sakamoto Ryōma and his wife Narasaki Ryō. Following an attempt on his life, which Narasaki helped thwart, the couple married and retreated to the hot springs of Kirishima, considered the first recorded Japanese honeymoon, where Sakamoto recovered from his wounds. Art by David Hueso.
